The West African nation of Cameroon is a microcosm of Africa itself. Both the French and English languages are spoken. There are Muslims and Christians and the landscape is as varied as Africa itself. You will find rain forests, deserts, plateaus, and mountains.
The capital of Cameroon is Yaounde. Heritage Tours is based here, offering experienced guides for tours. They offer a wide range of choices including safaris, eco- tours, and scouting safaris for pygmies or gorillas. Tours can be booked before arrival or from your hotel or guest house.
Traveling through Cameroon is best accomplished by bus. Rental cars are very costly and train service is sporadic. Buses leave the capital for outlying villages daily.
There are several not-to-be-missed villages and landmarks. Ngoketunja is the center of Cameroon culture and there are many places to experience traditional life. Ngoketunja consists of thirteen villages, each known as a Fondom and ruled by a Fon. The Babungo Palace and Museum is established here as is the Presspot Handicraft Center.
The Dja Faunal reserve has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is spectacularly gorgeous. Kribi is a haven for golfers and also has beautiful landscapes, waterfalls, and beaches. Heritage Tours can arrange visits to some or all of these villages during your stay.
Dining is a true adventure in Cameroon. In many of the small villages there is no refrigeration so keep in mind that beer and pop may be warm. Coca cola is well-liked as is the local TOP cola. Most beer is imported and you should have no trouble finding your favorite brand. Bland foods served with spicy sauces are the staple. Fufu is a sticky ball of starchy food that has been mashed into a ball and served with sauce.
Major airports are located in Yaounde and Douala. Air France, KLM, and Swissair all make frequent trips into and out of the country. Most international flights land in Douala. On arrival you can take a bus to the capital. The three hour ride is a great introduction to what will be a memorable vacation.
